In the movie, The Graduate, a man tells the young kid (Dustin Hoffman) “I have one word for you … plastics.” The look was one of discomfort. What the hell is he talking about.
Well today such a movie would have a new word … Graphene. It can be as small as one atom thick, conducts electricity like crazy and is 100 times stronger than steel. It is the next great transformative technology. Here are just a few things that will soon be possible.
Beam me a new phone. Since the material can take new shapes based on exposure to light, your brand new apple could just be a download. Want a tablet instead … just remake it into a new format. Want a screen you can roll up for storage … no problem.
How about a wearable bio monitor … like the Nike ONLY WAY BETTER. You could monitor your blood chemistry, check you DNA or even decide if driving tonight might not be advisable in real time. (NO officer, I am not drunk and I am not Polish … see my bracelet.)
How about a wearable battery that charges in seconds. (Hey back away from my t-shirt … it’s charging).
Or how about a faster internet speed … like a million times faster. The average US internet speed is 10 Megabits/second. Researchers at Georgia tech created an antenna that can transfer date at a speed of 1000 gigabits per second. That’s a terabyte per second … so why live in actual reality when immersive multi-person virtual reality is just around the corner. Seriously Graphene, you could be my new girlfriend.
Want more. Ok how about super cheap filtration that would allow us to desalinate sea water or even turn wine to water. Wait … that last one might not be good.
We are poised on the precipice of a new technology that will change our world. Silicone we hardly knew ye, but you are so yesterday. Society changing at breakneck speeds, our lives being slaves to technology and all that we know about to change … I guess some things never change.
GRAPHENE: It’s worth Goggling. There are some great articles out there. Graphene is NAAtastic.
